Obituary

Katherine "Kathy" Spindler (nee Cortinaz) was taken from us after a courageous battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully on October 16, 2026 surrounded by family. She was born on December 17, 1955 to the late Thomas and Julia Cortinaz. She spent the majority of her life in the Plymouth/Elkhart Lake area. Kathy was united in marriage to the love of her life, Dennis Spindler on October 26, 1991 at St. Paul's Christian Church.

Kathy had a variety of hobbies and interests. When she was younger, she enjoyed bowling, especially with her daughters, Joy and Julie. She was a proud, active dartball player, which she continued to do until she physically couldn't anymore. She played dartball in two leagues (Senior and Tuesday Night) and played Tuesday Nights with her son, Lee, when he was younger. She loved to go camping with her family, and excelled in the family tournaments of corn hole. Kathy also loved animals, especially cats. She was always taming cats to bring them inside to become cherished pets. She also loved her sister's dog, Od, who often ignored his owner when Kathy arrived. She loved cartoons, such as Disney and Pixar. She had a particular fondness for Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.

Kathy was known by many as "Sassypants" which became her nickname during her many camping trips and corn hole tournaments. She often teased her opponent's poor skills, and in response her family would say, "She's got her sassy pants on." Over time, she just became Sassypants, a name that she embodied every single day.

She loved spending time with and spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She passed on a lot of knowledge, especially when it comes to baking. Her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren loved spending Thanksgiving at her house where they would bake from the moment they woke up to the moment they went to bed. Kathy had a lot of love for all of her family and treasured every moment she spent with her siblings, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren (even when the great grandchildren got into mischief).

Kathy is survived by her children, Joy (Brian) O'Neil, Lee (Darien) Kapellen, Julie Kolpin; her grandchildren, Candice (Tyler) Raschella, Alyssa Bartlett (special friend, Nathan), Britney Bartlett (special friend, Devon), Jasmyne, Daymond, Aryan, Madysin, and Stormy (nee Lee and Darien Kapellen); her great grandchildren, Raelynn and Ryker Jackman, and Riley Raschella; her siblings, Mary Ann "Cookie" (Gene) McCloud, Camie (Randy) Lund, Jessie (Susan) Cortinaz, Laura "Skeeter" West, Linda Hau, Terry (Laura) Cortinaz, Darrell "Louie" (Carol) Cortinaz. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Spindler, her brother Thomas Junior Cortinaz, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services for Kathy will be held at 11:30am on Saturday October 24, 2026 at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt-DeTroye Funeral Home (815 6th St. Kiel) with Rev. Dan Krueger officiating. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00am until 11:15am when we will have brief family rites before the service starts. Burial will follow in the St. Paul's Cemetery, Town of Russell.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the medical staff of Froedtert Center for Advanced Care, Floor 7. These dedicated professionals were amazing and Kathy and her family felt their kindness every day they spent there. The family also would like to thank the First Responders of Kiel and Elkhart Lake, and the doctors and nurses at Aurora Sheboygan Medical Center.
