Harriet A.
Kuhlow
May 2, 1943 — Dec 11, 2018
Elkhart Lake
Harriet A. Kuhlow age 75, formerly of Elkhart Lake, passed away in the evening on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018, at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan after fighting a courageous battle against cancer.
Harriet was born May 2, 1943, in Glenbeulah, Wis., to Alfred and Elda (Kraemer) Bassuener. She attended Glenbeulah Schools and was a graduate of Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School, Class of 1961.
Harriet is survived by her loving husband Daniel, four daughters; Kim (Tom) Meser of Hortonville, Wis., Amy (Jon) Stumpf of Neenah, Wis., Kay (Bryon) Preissner of Plymouth, Wis., and Ann (Adam) Pfefferle of Kimberly, Wis. She is further survived by five amazing grandchildren, Katie and Nick Meser, Eric and Brad Preissner and Gwen Pfefferle. She is also survived by one brother, Richard (Judy) Bassuener of Plymouth, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Christine Bassuener Quasius, an infant brother and many cherished brothers and sisters in law.
Daniel and Harriet met in the summer of 1959 at the Silver Dollar picnic in Howards Grove, where he gave her a teddy bear he'd just won. They began dating, and when Daniel returned from his time in the army, after accidentally losing her class ring, he replaced it with an engagement ring. They were married on August 1, 1964 in what many have recalled as "the hottest day ever." They built their home and started to plant trees to eventually open Kuhlow's Christmas Tree farm. They have been faithful members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel throughout the years.
In the years Daniel worked at Bordens, Harriet tirelessly took care of the household and managed the tree farm during the week. She hosted field trips for local schools, tagged, cut and dragged out trees for customers in many feet of snow, tended her gardens, and handled many other tasks, all while finding time to cook the world's best food for her family. After Daniel retired, she continued to help with the farm and honed her skills as the best Grandma ever. Her love knew no limits for her grandchildren and she took great pride in each of them, cherishing all the time they spent together. Harriet was a kind, loving and generous woman, whose only enemies on earth were the weeds in her magnificent garden, and they stood no chance against her expert eye and weeding skills. Harriet loved Daniel and her family with every fiber of her being which was always abundantly clear.
In addition to her family, both immediate and extended, there were many people dear to Harriet, especially her best friend Mary Adleman, as well as the members of Daniel and Harriet's decade spanning card club.
The family wants to say a special thank you to Dr. Mark Bettag and his nurse Jen Giebel, both of whom Harriet adored. To Arik Ringmeier, RN in the ICU, your compassion, excellence in care, and kindness knew no bounds, and we will be forever grateful to you for everything you did for us. To Pastors Heup, Laabs and Ninmer, your visits and sharing the word of God with mom brought her and all of us immense comfort.
Harriet fought cancer bravely numerous times, and when the time came to stop fighting, she did so with the assurance that her Savior had prepared a place for her in heaven, where there is no cancer, no pain and a peace beyond all understanding. Daniel was with Harriet every step of the way on this journey, providing his love, courageous support and gentle kisses.
