He was baptized into the Christian Faith and confirmed at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Marinette. Don graduated from the eighth grade at Lourdes School in 1954 and from Marinette High School on June 3, 1958.  He enlisted with the US Army and began his basic training on November 20, 1958 at Fort Leonardwood, MO and enrolled in Aircraft Electrician School at Fort Eustis, VA. He looked forward to vegetable gardening with Audrey and manning his grape arbor and fruit tree while making wine from 1971 until 2015.

Donald was united in marriage to the love of his life, Audrey (nee Kobes) on October 24, 1970 at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Mishicot and became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel in January of 1971.  He served many years as an usher for Trinity Church and maintenance of its grounds including lawn mowing and snow blowing for over 25 years and was on the church cleaning schedule for more than 10 years. Don volunteered many hours in various duties during the construction of Trinity's new church and school in 2003-2004.
