Obituary

Cheryl Lyne Bornemann, 72, of Fond du Lac, died November 15, 2018. Her life's journey ended twenty-one months after she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a disease that affects the bone marrow.

Cheryl was born October 30, 1946, in Sheboygan, the daughter of the late Lowell and Edythe (Sieling) Freis, and grew up in Kiel, attending SS Peter and Paul Grade School and Kiel High School (Class of 1965). She graduated from Mount Mary College in 1969 and received her Master of Arts in Library Science (MALS) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1970.

Cheryl worked 35 years for the Fond du Lac Public Library, ending her career as the Coordinator of Support Services in 2010. In retirement Cheryl supported the library as a volunteer: She worked with Fond du Lac Literacy Services as a tutor, delivered books to homebound readers, and organized materials at Chapter 52, the library's used book store.

Cheryl loved her daily trips to the YMCA, where she made many good friends chatting on the elliptical or on nearby yoga mats. She was an avid movie-watcher, an enthusiastic fan of Wisconsin sports and a tenacious opponent in Scrabble/Words With Friends. Traveling with her daughter was a highlight of her time away from work and her retirement; she particularly enjoyed seeing the great museums of Italy, visiting the beaches of Normandy, and touring the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings that reminded her of the home her father built for his family in Kiel.

She is survived by her daughter, Samantha Bornemann, of Chicago. Other survivors include three brothers, Randy Freis, Ted Freis, and Dean Freis, all of Kiel; her sister and brother-in-law, Heidi and Bob Werdeo, Jr., of Kiel; her former husband, Larry Bornemann, of Fond du Lac; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Freis and Jeffrey Freis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church (413 Fremont St., Kiel). Per Cheryl's wishes cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at Kiel City Cemetery at a later date.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday at Church from 2:30 pm until time of service at 4:00 pm.

Cheryl was grateful for the wonderful care she received from Dr. Joel Lundberg and the oncology nurses at Agnesian, her stem cell transplant team at Froedtert Hospital and the supportive team at Agnesian Hospice Home of Hope.

Memorials may be made in Cheryl's name to the International Myeloma Foundation ( www.myeloma.org ) or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (themmrf.org).
