Obituary

Angeline Margareth Schmitz, 93, formerly of Kiel, died peacefully early Saturday morning, September 24, 2022 at Caring Hands Assisted Living in New Holstein.

She was born on the first day of summer, June 21, 1929, the daughter of Steve and Catherine Guelig.

Angie attended Catholic grade school in Mt. Calvary and was an honors graduate of St. Mary Springs Academy in Fond du Lac.  After graduation she went to technical college to study business.  While pursuing her education, she worked at her parent's store in Calvary Station. During this time, she also played the center position on the Community Women's basketball team.

Angie met Jerry, her future husband at an Easter dance in St. Cloud.  On October 24, 1953, she married Jerome "Jerry" Schmitz at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mt. Calvary.  Together they enjoyed 61 years of marriage until Jerry passed away on March 16, 2015.

Angie was a stay-at-home mother until the age of fifty-five when her three children were grown.  At this time, she started her employment at Kiel Tri-County Cooperative, later known as Country Visions.  She loved her co-workers and customers so much that she worked until the age of eighty-five when she decided to retire.

Angie was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel.  She was a member of the Christian Mother's Society and served on the Catholic School Board.  Angie and Jerry volunteered together for church and school activities.  Every day of their married life, they prayed the rosary together.

Angie loved living on Ninth Street in Kiel where she and Jerry lived their entire married life.  She enjoyed socializing with her neighbors who became lifelong friends.  Angie took great pride in her homemaking skills and never sat down until all visitors were fed.  Besides her cooking, her hobbies included word searches, trivia, puzzles, sewing, shopping, holiday decorating and watching all the activities and sporting events her children and grandchildren participated in at school.  Her smile and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her three children, Mary (Donald) Courchaine, Kiel, Mark (Julie) Schmitz, Sheboygan and John Schmitz, Sheboygan; five grandchildren, Angie (Cesar), Dustin (Jessica), Tanner (fiancée Kailey), Kira and Alex.  She is further survived by her only brother, Jerome "Jerry" (Sandra) Guelig; her youngest sister, Myrtle "Butch" (Melvin) Olig; sisters-in-law, Virginia "Ginny" Schmitz, Dolores Schmitz and Janet Schmitz.  She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including two dear grade school lifelong friends, Lyla Bertram and Mae Schmitz, another special friend, Alyce Winkel; Olivia and Alana (mother Tami) who were like grandchildren to her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome, her parents, Steve and Catherine Guelig, her sisters, Dolores (Leo) Wirth, Elsie (Richard) O'Connell, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry (Anna) Schmitz and her brothers-in-law, Stanley Schmitz, Eugene Schmitz and Cyril Schmitz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church (423 Fremont Street, Kiel) on Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Alvin Amadi and Rev. Carl Diederichs as celebrants.  Family and friends may call at the church, on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 am, when brief family rites will be held.  Entombment will take place at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum, Sheboygan.

Angie's family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Tom and his staff of caregivers, activity director and cooks at Caring Hands Assisted Living.  Your compassionate care, love and support will never be forgotten.  We want to thank Aunt Butch and Uncle Melvin Olig for guiding Angie's children through the later years of mom's life.  We were blessed to have your help and advice.  We would also like to extend a thank you to the Kiel Police and Ambulance for their exceptional service over the years, Coulis Cardiology, Froedtert Hospital, Pine Haven and Rocky Knoll therapy units, ProMedica Heartland, Kiel Senior Citizen Van Service, Paula Mahloch and Dorothy Muhs for their religious support, Alan and Andy Winkel and all the other relatives and friends who remembered Angie in their own special way.

Angie lived simply, loved generously, cared deeply, spoke kindly and left the rest to God.

"I love you.  Take care."  Angie Schmitz
