Howard C. Vorpahl, 88, of Kiel, died Sunday morning, August 12, 2012 at the Homestead Care Center, New Holstein, where he was a resident for the past year. Howard was born March 15, 1924, in Kiel, the son of Erich and Viola (Fleischman) Vorpahl. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1941. On April 12, 1947 he married Kathlyn Casper in Kiel. She preceded him in death on December 4, 1980. Mr. Vorpahl was called to Active Service in the Army in 1945 and served in WWII. He received the World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal upon Honorable Discharge on November 16, 1946. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6707 of Kiel. Mr. Vorpahl spent 40 years farming the family farm in the Town of New Holstein. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1989 after 18 years service to the Government of the United States. Surviving are two sons and two daughters; Richard (Barbara) of Eau Claire, James (Bonnie) of Kiel, Kathie Powers of Vienna, Virginia and Mary of Vienna, Virginia; 6 Grand Children; Scott (Kelly) Vorpahl, Gregory (Valerie) Vorpahl, Steve (Jennifer) Vorpahl, Douglas (Sara) Vorpahl, Sam (Angela) Montgomery and Lisa (Charles) Luedtke, 14 Great Grand Children and one Great-great Grand Child; and a brother, Donald (Lou) Vorpahl of Kiel. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kathlyn and a son-in-law; David Powers, sister; Ruth (John) Miller. Howard Vorpahl’s love for life was his family (children, grandchildren, great grandchildren) woodworking, fishing, traveling, gardening and chocolate. Funeral services will be held at St. John’s UCC Church, 2111 Church St. New Holstein on Thursday, August 16,, 2012 at 10:00 am with Rev. James Werner officiating. Burial will follow at the Kiel City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home 815 6th St. Kiel, on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and at the church on Thursday from 9:00 am until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a memorial fund in Mr. Vorpahl’s name.
